Herculan IG synthetic flooring is a versatile option for educational, hospitality and commercial spaces. Installing Herculan IG only takes a few days, and can be done over a weekend in many instances. For facilities that have VAT tiles, Herculan IG can be used to encapsulate asbestos and save on asbestos abatement costs. With so many uses, you may be wondering:
How do I maintain and clean Herculan IG synthetic flooring in my facility once its installed?
Q: My Herculan IG installation just wrapped up; how long should I wait to use it?
A: New or recoated floors should not be used for 24 hours after installation of Herculan IG to allow the surface to cure and dry completely.
Q: Our facility wants to maximize our investment. How do you suggest increasing the longevity of our new synthetic flooring?
A: Prevention is key to maintaining any new flooring installation, and Herculan IG is no different. Before the floor is open to general use, be sure to:
- First, sweep the floor with a clean (untreated) cotton mop
- Next, mix Herculan GT multi-cleaner with tap water (30:1 ratio)
- Then, damp mop the entire Herculan IG surface with this cleaner/water solution
- Last, allow the floor to air dry
Q: On a daily basis, how should my crew care for our new Herculan IG rubber floor?
A: Make sure to sweep daily with a clean cotton mop. Also be sure that the mop you are using is being washed periodically. You do not want to be contaminating the floors with grime from your mop!
Q: What if my floors look like they need something more than a dust mop?
A: Difficult stains and scuff marks may require a more vigorous cleaning with a non-abrasive cleaner. In these cases, stronger cleaning agents such as acetone can be used. Acetone is a good choice for tar removal. After using harsher cleaning agents, you should rinse the floor with water to avoid discoloration of the synthetic flooring. Mathusek always recommends testing any cleaning agent in an inconspicuous area (such as behind the bleachers in a gymnasium, or behind the door in a corner in a classroom).
Q: We have a cleaning crew that comes only once a week (or sometimes once a month); how should they maintain our Herculan IG flooring?
A: Similar to daily maintenance, weekly and monthly cleanings should include sweeping floor with a clean untreated dust mop and cleaning with a Herculan GT multi-cleaner with hot tap water. If floor is very dirty, increase a typical 30:1 ratio (cleaner to water) to a 20:1 ratio.
In this case, Mathusek recommends applying the cleaner/water solution to your synthetic flooring with a soft rotary brush scrubber or auto scrubber. Let the solution sit on the flooring surface for 10-15 minutes, but do not allow it to dry! Slowly scrub with the rotary brush scrubber/auto scrubber with a white, tan or tampico scrub pad.
Make sure to allow the surface to dry overnight.
