In an open letter to Architects, the MFMA recommended moving away from 33/32″ maple strip flooring. Current studies have shown that we need to rethink using this thicker wood size.
33/32″ was the standard for many years in the Maple Flooring Industry. It could take 8-10 sandings and moved the life cycle of the floor to 60+ years. 25/32″ provides 4-6 sandings with a regular maintenance schedule and the floor can last upwards of 40 years.
As an example of “over-engineering”, recent analysis has shown that only 1% of replacement floors were necessary because of depleted wear surface. The most common reasons to replace flooring has been flooding, improper maintenance practices and demolition/replacement of buildings.
The MFMA is asking that we limit the specification of 33/32″ thick maple flooring to projects where it is truly necessary. “By reducing the number of installations for which this type of “over-engineering” is currently being done, we can reduce the waste of a natural resource and to allow the supply of maple hardwood to exist in perpetuity.”
